Year 2 ignite their understanding of the Great Fire of London
On Wednesday this week, pupils from Year 2 had an exciting opportunity to visit the Boys’ School Science labs. Their visit aimed to reinforce their knowledge about the Great Fire of London through practical experiments. The students engaged in a series of tests to determine the flammability of different materials and by observing which materials burned and how quickly, they gained a deeper understanding of fire behaviour.
One of the experiments involved timing how long it took for candles to extinguish in variously sized beakers. This allowed the students to explore the impact of different container sizes on the rate at which flames consumed oxygen. Through this hands-on activity, the students learned how the availability of oxygen affects the duration of a fire.
Pupils also enjoyed an experiment showing how fire can spread along a row of connected houses and how a fire break can stop this, which really brought to life the topic of The Great Fire of London.
Pupils even had the chance to witness a demonstration by Dr. Pye. They were amazed as he let each of them set his hand on fire in turn, showcasing the science behind fire manipulation and the importance of safety precautions. This thrilling experience not only captivated the pupils’ attention but also emphasized the significance of responsible experimentation.
Overall, Year 2 had a fantastic time during their visit to the MTBS Science labs. Through their experiments, they not only had fun but also gained valuable knowledge about fire and its behaviour. This immersive learning experience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the pupils, fostering their curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific exploration.
