Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a cornerstone of co-curricular life at Merchant Taylors’, offering Sixth Form pupils the chance to challenge themselves, grow in confidence, and develop essential life skills. Open to all, the Award encourages pupils to step outside their comfort zones and take ownership of their personal development through a structured and rewarding programme.
Delivered with care and expertise, the Award is available at Silver and Gold levels in the Sixth Form. Pupils build their own programme by choosing activities that reflect their interests and goals, including volunteering, physical activity, skill development, and a self-sufficient expedition. At Gold level, participants also complete a residential experience, working with new people in unfamiliar settings to build independence and resilience.
The programme is designed to be flexible and inclusive, allowing pupils to progress at their own pace while receiving guidance from experienced staff. Sixth Formers benefit from a dedicated training programme that supports them in planning and completing their expeditions, developing navigation and first aid skills, and building the confidence needed to succeed in challenging environments.
Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is not only a mark of commitment and perseverance, it also enhances university and job applications, demonstrating initiative, leadership, and a willingness to contribute to the wider community. For many pupils, it becomes one of the most memorable and transformative aspects of their time in the Sixth Form.
