University Applications
Applying to university is a significant milestone in every Sixth Former’s journey, and at Merchant Taylors’ we provide a structured, personalised, and highly supportive programme to guide pupils through every stage of the process. Our aim is to ensure that each pupil makes informed choices, submits a strong application, and feels confident about their next steps beyond school.
The university application process begins in the Lower Sixth with a series of information sessions, workshops, and one-to-one guidance meetings. Pupils are encouraged to explore a wide range of courses and institutions, both in the UK and internationally, and to reflect on their academic interests, career aspirations, and personal strengths. Our experienced tutors and Higher Education team provide tailored advice on course selection, entry requirements, and how to make competitive applications.
Throughout the summer term of Lower Sixth and into the Upper Sixth, pupils work on their personal statements, supported by dedicated writing workshops and individual feedback. Those applying to highly competitive courses, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Oxbridge, receive additional support through structured pathways, including admissions test preparation, mock interviews, and mentoring from alumni and subject specialists.
The UCAS application process formally opens in early September of the Upper Sixth year. Pupils are encouraged to finalise and submit their applications well before the January deadline, with early deadlines in October for Oxbridge and certain medical courses. Offers typically begin to arrive from universities between November and March, with final decisions and firm choices made by the spring.
Our support continues beyond submission, with guidance on responding to offers, preparing for interviews, and navigating results day. We also provide advice on alternative pathways, including apprenticeships, gap years, and international study options.
At every stage, our goal is to empower pupils to make confident, well-informed decisions about their future, supported by expert guidance and a wealth of resources.
