Fiona Glenn (2002 Leaver) – Understanding and Meaning: A Journey to Clinical Psychology

Understanding and Meaning: A Journey to Clinical Psychology

I’ve always been driven to understand people and situations better. While at Merchants I volunteered with the school’s Listening Service and the Stroke Association – these gave me the opportunity to use my curiosity about others to support people. I loved Biology with Mrs Fairburn, and Politics with Mr Cox. These subjects allowed me to appreciate the complexity of our world, and the chance to start developing an interest in the scientific method, and think about how larger, social / systemic factors impact on our lives. Following from this, it was Psychology that I settled upon for university. Psychology has a basis in scientific understanding, with strong theoretical underpinnings; it also offered me the potential to develop into a career in which I might be able to help others too.

It’s been a long process to finally qualify as a Clinical Psychologist – the academic demands (undergraduate, a master’s and then a doctorate) can seem to take forever! Each step has been varied and fulfilling – I’ve worked with many different people, been part of lots of interesting teams and made amazing friends along the way. Most recently, since I qualified, I took up a post in a Drugs and Alcohol Service in Middlesex.

The role of a Clinical Psychologist varies hugely. In my current job an average week involves: conducting an evaluation of the service, supervising the work of colleagues, working with clients in individual and group settings, and delivering training. I have the opportunity to help people to address their drug and alcohol use directly, but also to support their development of ‘recovery capital’ – the resources that will help someone to recover from drug use. With this in mind, I work directly to support people’s mental health, relationships and parenting skills. I work as part of a team of Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Nurses and Psychiatrists, and together we are able to support most aspects of a person’s recovery – we also link up with voluntary organizations wherever possible.

While at Merchants I had the opportunity to understand some of what I wanted from life, the values I held, and what careers might be able to achieve this. Psychology has given me one way to achieve these values, and as such is both challenging and rewarding.

What an action-packed first day we’ve had at Cas What an action-packed first day we’ve had at Castle Head for our Year 7 residential! After a quick lunch, pupils headed straight into their first activities. We joined Groups 3 and 4 as they took on the challenge of ghyll scrambling, tackling the rocky streams with plenty of enthusiasm.

Later, after a well-earned dinner of fajitas, everyone took part in the classic egg-drop challenge, designing and building contraptions to keep their egg safe from cracking when dropped from a height. A brilliant mix of teamwork, creativity and plenty of suspense rounded off a fantastic first day!

On Wednesday morning, the entire Merchant Taylors’ community, from our very youngest pupils in Reception through to the Upper Sixth, together with teaching and support staff gathered for a whole school photograph 📸

This was our first whole school photo since the end of 2019, which was taken ahead of our 400th Anniversary celebrations in 2020. It also carries added significance as our first photograph as a fully co-educational school, capturing in one image the unity and strength of our community from ages 4 to 18.

There was a wonderful sense of excitement as everyone assembled on the Senior School field, creating a snapshot that symbolises both our shared history and the exciting journey ahead.
After the opening of Mulberry House, our @merchant After the opening of Mulberry House, our @merchant_taylors Company Prize winners from Speech Day enjoyed a special Tuesday afternoon tea with Brigadier Christopher Coles and Rebecca Pirt from the Merchant Taylors’ Company.

These prizes are awarded each year to pupils from Year 7 to Upper Sixth who show intellectual curiosity and academic ambition across the curriculum.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our prize winners once again. ✨

Thanks to a generous grant from the @merchant_taylors Company, the refurbished building now brings together our pastoral leaders, nursing and healthcare, learning support, and counselling teams under one roof - creating a dedicated hub of support for every pupil. 💙

We were delighted to be joined by Brigadier Christopher Coles, Clerk of the Merchant Taylors’ Company, and Rebecca Pirt, the Company’s Education, Grants and Relationships Manager, alongside our Headmaster Mr Dearden. We also welcomed governors Charles Cowling, Philip Marshall KC and Gareth Mawdsley to mark this important milestone.

Mulberry House will be at the heart of pupil welfare at MTS, ensuring that care, guidance and wellbeing remain central to school life. 🌿✨
