Year 8 Pupils Learn About Bacteriophages

On Thursday 17th April, some of our Year 8 students got the opportunity to work with a Biology student from the University of Liverpool. James Hanson shared his knowledge and research of bacteriophages with the girls, who could apply their own understanding of micro-organisms to compare the use of these viruses to more traditional antibiotic treatments for bacterial infections. They were then able to use a range of equipment from the university to set up their own agar plates in order to see whether the bacteriophage provided would kill a particular type of bacteria the girls used. They had to get to grips with equipment such as micropipettes, pipette pumps, dilutions and aseptic technique. The plates are being incubated at the university and we look forward to seeing the results!
