Music sits at the heart of life at Merchant Taylors’, enriching the school experience for every pupil and offering a vibrant space for creativity, collaboration, and personal expression. We are proud to offer a dynamic and inclusive music programme that nurtures talent at every level and encourages pupils to explore their musical potential.

From the very start of their journey, pupils are supported to engage with music in meaningful ways. In Year 7, we offer highly subsidised instrumental tuition in small groups, with instruments provided by the school and only a nominal contribution from families. This early access helps pupils build confidence and discover new interests in a supportive environment.

Our co-curricular music programme is broad and welcoming, with ensembles catering to a wide range of abilities and musical styles. Pupils can take part in concert band, swing band, brass and string groups, choirs, and chamber ensembles, with regular opportunities to perform at school events, concerts, and competitions.
Whether a pupil is an experienced musician or picking up an instrument for the first time, music at Merchant Taylors’ is about participation, enjoyment, and growth. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of music while also providing pathways for those who wish to pursue it at a higher level.
