Rugby Scholarship Assessment Day

Merchant Taylors’ has a proud and long-standing tradition of rugby excellence. Our programme combines high-level coaching, competitive fixtures against leading schools, and a clear player-development pathway that supports boys from grassroots participation through to representative success. Many of our pupils go on to play academy and county rugby, and our commitment to skill development, physical conditioning, and character shines through in every squad.

Our Rugby Scholarship Assessment Day gives aspiring players the chance to experience this environment first-hand and demonstrate their potential.

The day will begin with a welcome from the Director of Sport and the Headmaster, followed by a series of activities designed to assess both current ability and long-term potential:

• Athletic screening and fitness testing to understand each player’s physical profile
• Technical and sport-specific skills focusing on handling, contact skills, and decision-making
• Unit skills and positional development
• Match play and game-based scenarios within our competitive training environment

Candidates will join members of the Sports Department for lunch, before the day concludes with a short closing talk outlining the next steps. Pupils will then be invited back for a follow-up interview later in December.
