Rugby World Cup Fever Hits Merchant Taylors’!

Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School was delighted to welcome girls and boys from nine local primary schools to take part in a Rugby Tag Tournament to promote the game in the local area on Monday 28th September.

Each school brought a team of 10 players from their Year 6s and the boys and girls played in 4 groups of 4 teams. After the exciting qualifying games Great Crosby RC Primary School took on a Farnborough Road Junior School team in the Plate Final with Merchant Taylors’ taking on Runnymede in the Cup Final. Both finals were exciting to watch and brilliantly played with all the teams having enjoyed a lovely afternoon of rugby.

Merchant Taylors’ rugby continues to thrive under the guidance of Mr Dan King, Head of Rugby, who commented “last season the school played 120 games of rugby with more than 200 pupils taking part. The aim of our festival is to get more children involved in the game. Merchant Taylors’ has excellent links with Waterloo Rugby Club who have a thriving junior section. I hope that the tournament will become an annual event!”

Merchant Taylors’ helped to develop former pupil Ben Kay, the retired England lock. As a small child Ben started playing Mini Rugby for Waterloo Under 9’s and progressed through the School’s teams before joining the Leicester Tigers just before the 1999 World Cup. Ben was rewarded with his first England cap against Canada in 2001 and in 2003 he appeared in his first Grand Slam at the 6 Nations and contributed to England’s first ever Test victory on Australian soil and an away victory against the mighty All Blacks! Ben can now be heard commenting on this year’s World Cup for BT Sport.

Day 2 of the Year 7 residential at Castle Head con Day 2 of the Year 7 residential at Castle Head continued with plenty more adventure! After enjoying their packed lunches, pupils got stuck into a new round of activities, including some who took on the challenge of raft building. Working together in their teams, they designed and constructed their own rafts using barrels, poles and rope before taking to the water to put their creations to the test. There were plenty of splashes, laughs and a real sense of achievement as everyone worked together to complete challenges.

Later in the evening, after tucking into a delicious lasagne, everyone gathered around the campfire to build a fire and toast marshmallows together, the perfect way to end another busy day.

After a quick lunch, pupils headed straight into their first activities. We joined Groups 3 and 4 as they took on the challenge of ghyll scrambling, tackling the rocky streams with plenty of enthusiasm.

Later, after a well-earned dinner of fajitas, everyone took part in the classic egg-drop challenge, designing and building contraptions to keep their egg safe from cracking when dropped from a height. A brilliant mix of teamwork, creativity and plenty of suspense rounded off a fantastic first day!

On Wednesday morning, the entire Merchant Taylors’ community, from our very youngest pupils in Reception through to the Upper Sixth, together with teaching and support staff gathered for a whole school photograph 📸

This was our first whole school photo since the end of 2019, which was taken ahead of our 400th Anniversary celebrations in 2020. It also carries added significance as our first photograph as a fully co-educational school, capturing in one image the unity and strength of our community from ages 4 to 18.

There was a wonderful sense of excitement as everyone assembled on the Senior School field, creating a snapshot that symbolises both our shared history and the exciting journey ahead.

These prizes are awarded each year to pupils from Year 7 to Upper Sixth who show intellectual curiosity and academic ambition across the curriculum.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our prize winners once again. ✨
