Merchant Taylors’ Year 5 pupil, William Irvine, received an extra special present on his 10th birthday as he took part in the Liverpool Spring Open Meet 2019, held at Liverpool Aquatics centre in Wavertree.
Dedicated swimmer, William, who represents Crosby Swimming Club and City of Liverpool had cause for extra celebration as he claimed first place in the 200m Individual Medley. William saw off competition from some of the best swimmers across the North West, some of which were older than him, to grab first place with a time of 2:56.2.
Even more remarkably, he was only allowed to compete as he turned 10 on the actual day of the competition! Not only did he claim victory however, the result now sees him ranked number one in the UK for 10-year-old boys age group.
William usually trains five times a week and the 200m Individual Medley wasn’t his only victory in the competition, as he also won the 100m Backstroke too. William hopes to one day be able to represent Great Britain in the Commonwealth or Olympic Games and secure a gold medal in the future.
Everyone at Merchant Taylors’ is proud of William’s achievements and wishes him every success for the future!

On Friday last week a group of 30 year 9 Physics students visited the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Its main feature is an enormous 250ft tall radio telescope – the third largest moveable radio telescope in the world.
During the day, the pupils learned about the research carried out by British scientists using this telescope, which includes studying distant stars and galaxies, tracking space probes, detecting meteor showers, and searching for extra-terrestrial life.
The students took part in various activities, which included using banks of lasers, lenses and mirrors to simulate how telescopes detect and focus signals from space. They also went inside the planetarium and were taken on a virtual tour of the cosmos.
Despite the wet weather It was a fun, interesting experience and gave the students a real insight into the exciting space science being carried out by British scientists today.

Lancashire’s Second XI faced Yorkshire in their opening Second XI Trophy game of the season and featured three former Merchant Taylors’ pupils in their XI.
The match took place at Scarborough Cricket Club and it was the second time that Lancashire had faced Yorkshire having drawn a friendly game in the days prior.
Lancashire were captained by 2018 Leaver, George Lavelle who was also joined in the team by former pupils Tom Hartley and Ben Aitchison. Captain Lavelle won the toss and elected to bowl first, but Yorkshire made a strong start with the bat reaching 239-2.
Lancashire eventually restricted their opposition to 314-9 but unfortunately never got going with the bat themselves against an experienced Yorkshire XI. Lancashire were bowled out for 104 which saw them defeated by 210 runs.
Both Lavelle and Hartley signed their first professional contracts with Lancashire prior to the 2019 season. Lavelle has recently travelled to Dubai with the first team on the 2018 pre-season tour and was also called up the England U19s, making his debut against South Africa.
🎥 Rob Lord took 4-61 with the ball as Yorkshire posted 314-9 from their 50 overs.
Hartley, a spin bowler, played an important role in the Second XI squad which was crowned T20 Champions, claiming three for 12 in the final against Essex. Speaking after signing his deal, Tom Hartley, 20, said: “I am thrilled to sign my first professional contract with the Red Rose.”
Everyone at MTS wishes all three every success in their respective futures!

On Thursday we were joined by two former Merchant Taylors’ students, Dr Libby Wilson and Dr Nikhil Misra, who gave a talk on careers in medicine to Year 11 and Lower Sixth boys and girls. Dr Wilson is an Emergency Medicine Consultant at Aintree Hospital and Dr Misra is a Consultant General and Trauma Surgeon.
They both delivered an informative and interactive presentation, answering questions about their respective careers. Dr Wilson and Dr Misra gave students a glimpse of what they could expect if they decided to embark upon a career in medicine, and how they ended up in their chosen fields. Students were also informed of the many different career paths they could take if they opted to study Medicine, including research, working abroad or even serving in the armed forces.
We look forward to seeing Dr Misra again in the summer term, when he will deliver a session on treating a trauma wound.

On Thursday 17th April, some of our Year 8 students got the opportunity to work with a Biology student from the University of Liverpool. James Hanson shared his knowledge and research of bacteriophages with the girls, who could apply their own understanding of micro-organisms to compare the use of these viruses to more traditional antibiotic treatments for bacterial infections. They were then able to use a range of equipment from the university to set up their own agar plates in order to see whether the bacteriophage provided would kill a particular type of bacteria the girls used. They had to get to grips with equipment such as micropipettes, pipette pumps, dilutions and aseptic technique. The plates are being incubated at the university and we look forward to seeing the results!

Michael Neophytou has enjoyed further success in fencing and is now ranked number one in the country for his age. Michael, despite being aged only 10 is the current U12 North West champion, a feat that earned him a place at the British nationals in Sheffield, two years ahead of his time.
On Saturday 29th March, Michael competed in the National Elite Epee Series Event 2 held in Peterborough. Fencing in the Under 10’s category, he was ranked 7th going into the direct elimination rounds, after a good performance in the poule fights.

On Tuesday 26th March sixteen boys, Joseph Bigley, Charlie Johnson, Alex Meadows, James Randall, Zac Richardson, Sulaimaan Ahmed, Raiden Swindells, Matthew Hannon, Junior Connor, Hugh Lawrence, Rajan Naidoo, Harry Wynne, Buckley Loftus, Raveen Mallawa, Hemanth Bheemireddy, and Methul Gamage, went to Crosby Library for the Sefton Super Reads award afternoon.
Pupils from several local schools gathered to hear two of the shortlisted writers, Ele Fountain, author of Boy 87, and Sylvia Bishop, author of The Secret of the Night Train, talk about the inspiration for their writing, and the background to the books. Boy 87 was written in Addis Ababa, where Ele and her family had moved. Some of the characters were based on the Ethiopian women she had met there. As she had been a publisher’s editor before she wrote her own novel, Ele decided to use a pseudonym so she was unknown to publishers, who accepted her book on its own merits. Ele’s favourite authors include Philip Reeve and Patrick Ness, while Sylvia loves John Steinbeck. As Sylvia loves to do research, she made the train journey from Paris to Istanbul, before using it in her book. She is now working on a novel about smugglers in the eighteenth century, researching in the National Maritime Museum and its library.
Pupils asked some very perceptive and searching questions, before the winners of the book review competition were announced. Rajan Naidoo won a prize for his review of Charlie and Me by Mark Lowery. The winner of Sefton Super Reads 2019 was Boy 87, the first award Ele has ever won. She said she was especially delighted, as this award is decided by the votes of children.
Mrs Rea and Mrs Coleman, and all the boys, enjoyed spending the afternoon hearing about books

Twelve year old Darren Toh, who was born deaf, has been awarded the highest possible IQ score by MENSA, months after passing his GCSE Maths exam with a Grade 9.
Darren did not speak until the age of five after being diagnosed with bilateral genetic congenital deafness and first learned to communicate by using sign language. However, it has now been confirmed he is among the 1% of MENSA applicants to record a maximum IQ score of 162, surpassing the figure reportedly held by both Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Any MENSA score above 140 is considered ‘genius’ level.
Darren received a special needs statement and enrolled in a specialist school at a young age, but his progress by the age of seven encouraged his parents to place him to MTS. Since then, he has won the academic prize every year and developed a passion for maths. Last summer, he sat a GCSE Maths exam – four years earlier than usual – and passed with a score of 92%. He has also been at the forefront of our enrichment programme and was part of the school team that reached last year’s final of the international Maths in Motion challenge.
Darren lives in Aughton with his parents, younger sister Corinne, aged eight, and 14-year-old brother Brendan, who has autism. He also plays piano at grade six, has studied saxophone to grade five and is at grade four in LAMDA drama and performing arts.
Headmaster David Wickes said: “Darren is a remarkable young man who has overcome great personal challenges and everybody at Merchant Taylors’ is extremely proud of his achievements.
“To make such incredible progress at this young age is testament to his determination and intelligence, as well as the support of his family, friends and teachers. There is no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him and we will continue to do all we can through our academic and extra-curricular programmes to help him realise his enormous potential.”
Darren’s mother, paediatrician Dr May Ng, said: “Darren was born deaf but has never let his disability stop him from doing anything. After scoring 92% in his GCSE Maths exam, he is taking GCSE Further Maths later this year.
“We have not looked back since he joined Merchant Taylors’ as the school has nurtured him through the years with fantastic teachers along the way. He surprised us by saying he wants to be a paediatrician like me when he’s older, which is great to hear, and I’m sure he can achieve whatever he sets his mind to.”
Darren appeared on BBC North West Tonight talking to David Guest about his achievements:
