Magical Maths Ends the Term on a Mind Boggling Puzzle

KS2 children have enjoyed another challenging and fun filled course of Magical Maths with the Professor this term. Further details about the next course will be sent out in the Spring Term.

See what the pupils got up to in their last session below:
Last week we had some Mind Boggling puzzles and super fun games. These things can be so tricky that we had more than a few students asking “is this even possible?!?!”…

They definitely are though. You just have to do a bit of ‘Magical Maths’ thinking. Here’s the lowdown…

Mind Boggling Puzzles and Games Booklet

Here’s yet another Key Stage 2 puzzle booklet. There is a VERY good reason why we call these mind boggling puzzles. The children solved problems which were capable of boggling even the most capable of minds. All of the Key Stage two children could do them before leaving, hopefully they’ve boggled you with them (sorry about that).

All students were given a booklet to take home…let us know if you want us to send you another one.

Magic Dice

Here is yet another unbelievable mind-reading trick. It is a trick featuring 7 magic dice (not the usual 1-6 dice however, these are extra special dice). A volunteer was asked to adjust all the dice so that the top faces have a different colour, and then they were asked to add up all the top numbers. Before the volunteer had chance to even organise their dice, the person doing the trick was able to give them the answer, in the matter of only a few seconds. Unbelievable!!

Puzzle Sheets

A variety of puzzle sheets matching the mathematics national curriculum (as do all of our activities) including Follow the Trails, Number Name Crossword, Footprints, Number Crosswords and Spellutator, Magical Message, Addition up to 50 and how many fingers wordsearch.  These puzzles are designed to make children think and develop their mathematical abilities while still having fun.

Our final Magical Maths session at your school is over and it really has been an incredible 5 weeks. Professor Poopenshtinken and the gang wish they could go back in time and do it all over again (the Professor’s time machine isn’t quite ready to go just yet though).

I would love to hear some feedback from yourselves and the children about the club. Would you be able to give me an email back with your thoughts about the club? Did the children enjoy it? We love to read your emails. It helps us to keep the standard of the clubs high and also let us know of any improvements that could be made.

I look forward to receiving your email,

Brian Banks
Head of taking care of sad Magical Maths helpers.

Year 6 Pupil Qualifies for BMX World Championships

James in his GB shirt

Year 6 pupil, James Criddle, has qualified to represent Great Britain at the BMX World Championships next year and will be competing in Belgium next July.

James works very hard and trains 3 – 4 times per week and it is his commitment that has helped him to compete at the highest level in BMXing. Only the top 14 riders from the UK qualify for the ‘Worlds’, which was James’ ultimate goal at the start of this season. James’ family and we as a School are very proud of his achievements and we wish him all the best of luck in the Championship next year!

MTPS Raise Money for Homeless Charity this Christmas

The School Council at Merchant Taylors’ Primary recently decorated a Christmas Tree as part of St. Faith’s Church Christmas tree festival. The charity we chose to support this year is the Whitechapel Centre for the homeless in Liverpool.

Well done girls, the tree looks fantastic! Thank you for all your efforts in supporting the Whitechapel Centre this Christmas.

Alumni Cross the Atlantic for Speech Day Celebrations

Merchant Taylors’ Schools enjoy recognising the achievements of its talented and happy community and in the last few weeks we did just that. Speech Day ceremonies took place at Liverpool’s Royal Philharmonic Hall where both of our Senior Schools celebrated our pupils’ successes in academic subjects and extra-curricular activities.

Optical Engineer for NASA, Lauren McNally was the keynote speaker for the Senior Girls’ School, while US-based Chief Finance Officer and accident survivor, Mark Brereton was welcomed at the Senior Boys’ celebration.

Lauren, a 2009 leaver, has flourished in a career in engineering. Now working for NASA in their Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is the Telecom Software Engineer. After completing her M.Eng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London, Lauren talked about considering a move in to other fields such as law and advertising, before accepting a role at the UK Space Agency. This decision would change her life and career path forever as it would eventually lead her to a job at NASA, where she is developing Deep Space Optical Communications for a Mars Helicopter, launching in 2020.

Lauren told the girls to seize every opportunity available to them and to work hard. She explained that you never know where these opportunities might lead so don’t worry if you don’t quite know what direction to go in yet. “No matter how scary, tiring or difficult something might be, keep trying and you’ll do just fine.”

At the Senior Boys’ Speech Day, they were delighted to welcome Mark Brereton, an Old Boy who left in 1991. Mark recounted his less ‘conventional’ life story that saw him leaving a student pilot training programme with the Royal Air Force (a great regret) to working his way up from a trainee Accountant to Director of Accounting with Pirelli Tyres, a role that took him to America where he has lived for 20 years. In 1999 Mark acquired his pilot license and found his passion in racing motorcycles. However, in 2007, Mark suffered a motorcycle mechanical failure whilst approaching a corner at over 150mph and, with a failed front brake, he crashed through the corner and broke his spine, rendering him a paraplegic.

Mark survived and focused on prospering. Firstly, he went back to work and now he enjoys activities such as scuba diving, sky diving and takes recently paralysed young people flying in helicopters. He now lives in Alabama with his wife Samantha and is the Chief Financial Officer for a small and fast-growing cabinet manufacturer.

Mark told the boys: “It is never too early to start taking note of your dreams and working out how to turn them into reality. Make plans, see them through, but also know that life can make a mockery of your plans in an instant.”

The ceremonies also saw both the Headmistress, Headmaster, Head Girl Team, Head Boy Team and a number of Year 7 pupils talk about their own experiences at Merchant Taylors’ whilst audiences enjoyed musical and theatrical performances.

Claire Tao, Headmistress at the Girls’ School said: “Having the opportunity to address the whole school community at an event like this is incredible. The stories we share and the successes we celebrate together show what a warm, talented and nurturing community we have at our school.”

David Wickes, Headmaster at the Boys’ School added: “Our young men enjoyed some tremendous achievements last year and this was perfect occasion for the school to come together and celebrate what we are all about – hard work, happy boys and seizing opportunities.”

Sporting Success for Merchant Taylors’

It has been a week of sporting success at the Senior Boys’ School, as one of our upper sixth students and a recent leaver have signed professional contracts in their respective sports.
2018 Leaver George Lavelle has signed with Lancashire Cricket, having featured for their second XI this season and winning the T20 final with the team against Essex. Lavelle, a wicket keeper batsman who plays for Ormskirk Cricket Club, travelled to Dubai with the Lancashire First Team on this year’s pre-season tour and his good form earned him a call-up to the England U19s, making his debut in the Test Match against South Africa in July.

Speaking about signing, George said “I couldn’t be happier to sign my first professional contract with the county that I have grown up representing. I’ve really enjoyed my time in the Academy and this is the next step in my development. My aim is to continue performing regularly for the Second XI and push my case for selection for the First Team over the next two years.”
Earlier this week, 1st XV Captain James Harper committed his future to Sale Sharks, signing his first professional deal with the club. Having trained with England U-18s earlier this year, as well representing the School and Southport RUFC, the deal will see James progress into the Senior Academy at Sale.

We wish both George and James every success from all at MTS!

Kids’ Lit Quiz 2018

Eight boys from MTBS and four girls from MTGS, in Year 7 & 8, enjoyed taking part in the Kids’ Lit Quiz on Friday 9th November.

This year, the Quiz was hosted by Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School, where 19 teams from schools across Merseyside took part.

The Boys’ School teams were: Ahmed Bashier, Joseph Bigley, Adam Blagbrough, William Cunliffe, Drew Hutchinson, Zac Richardson, Liam-James Sewards, Raiden Swindells  Although the Boys’ teams, did not get through to the national final, they did well in the rounds on saints, realms and Shakespeare. Wayne Mills, the question master from New Zealand, made the afternoon speed by with ten rounds of questions on all aspects of children’s books, giving book prizes for each round and cash prizes for extra questions.

The Girls’ team was Mary Nicols, Neave McCormick,Camilla-Jane Dean and Lily Bland. The MTGS team came a very creditable 6th, considering one member was co-opted at twenty minutes notice, to cover for an absent team member. Our own history teacher, Mrs Grindley, won an audience spot prize by recognising the opening lines of The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico!

The winner this year was Wirral Grammar School for Girls, who will take part in the national final in London. National winners go to Singapore in 2019 to compete in the world final. Well done to all those involved!

Cross Country Success

On Wednesday 14th November, the first of three races in the Sefton Schools’ Cross Country League was held at Birkdale common. In the 2km Year 7 race, most of our boys were competing for the first time. Overall the team scored 54 points with great performances from Sammy Pickerill who came 3rd and Monty Barr who won the race. The Year 8 and 9 boys competed together over a slightly longer course and again Merchants’ had a runner who won the race; well done to Andrew Storch.

The team performed well with notable runs from Thomas Cunliffe who was competing in his first cross country race and Joe Cosgrove.

In the Merseyside Schools’ X Country on Saturday 17th November Monty Barr came 1st and Sammy Pickerill came 2nd in the year 7 race. Both boys have now been selected to represent Merseyside in the Northern Inter-County Schools’ Competition to be held in Cheshire in December.

Well done boys!

Sixth Form Student Visits Menin Gate on Remembrance Sunday

Email from Archivist Mr Hildrey

An MTBS Sixth Form student, Dominic, was chosen to attend the 100 year anniversary of WWI service at the Menin Gate in Belgium, on behalf of West Lancashire Scouts this month. It was a huge honour to be invited to landmark event, with many dignitaries attending.

Dominic travelled to Belgium and visited various WWI sites in the area, attending the 100 year commemoration ceremony on Sunday 11th November. Whilst Dominic was there, he sent us some photos of the Menin Gate, where he found many of our Old Boys’ names after talking to our Archivist, Mr Hildrey.

Thank you Dominic for sharing your findings with the Merchants’ community and what a memorable occasion to be a part of.
