Great Opening Win for MTS Swimmers

Tuesday 13th September 2016 Merchant Taylors’ swimming team opened their season with a home match against Manchester Grammar School. Our new year 7 swimmers proved to be a good addition to the team with many great swims notably from J Carney and A Curd to win their age group 39 points to 37. Joseph Cameron-Mansour lead the battle of the Under 13’s with two fine wins swimming 50 freestyle in 30 sec. Their score was a 2 point lose 36-38. All the under 15’s put in a great effort with George Wyn- Jones winning a great battle in the 5om freestyle. Despite their effort they lost by 6 Points. Throughout the match the lead changed with every swim, but special praise must go to the Open team C Leece, M Johnson, J Spinks and 3 great new additions to the team, S Davies, Issac Lea and Y Cai. Despite all their efforts we were only 2 point ahead going into the last event the open 4x50m Freestyle relay meaning it was all down to the last race. I have never seen an MGS open team suffer such a defeat, the open teams victory took them to a massive win 45 points to 24. Overall the final result was MTS 155 MGS 147 giving only our second win over MGS in 20 years.

Eco Committee Work Hard for New Green Flag

In the summer term, the Eco-committee was put to the test when two assessors from Eco-Schools England visited MTGS to determine whether or not the school retained its green flag status. On the 14th June, the visitors met with Miss Burns and the Eco-committee, comprising of girls from all year groups, to hear about the ongoing projects, aims and successes of the committee. The girls proudly spoke about their fundraising for the charity WaterAid, their pledge not to use plastic bags, the success of their “Waste Week” campaign and their ideas to reduce litter and promote healthy eating, both in school and at home.

The assessors received a warm welcome from the committee and enjoyed a tour of the school, which highlighted the ongoing recycling facilities as well as the exciting plans for the eco garden, currently undergoing redevelopment.

Following the assessment, we recently received our new green flag and confirmation of our continuing status as an eco-school. The incredibly positive feedback from the assessors reflects the hard work, passion and dedication shown by the eco-committee members;

“This school is outstanding in relation to the extent of the eco activities they are involved in. Teachers and pupils were engaging and enthusiastic in talking about the eco agenda and in taking us around the school to show us the range of activities. It was evident that they have more plans for next year – they clearly live and breathe Eco-schools. Well done to everyone and keep up the great work”.

 Well done girls!

Under 14 Cricket County Cup Champions!

Lancs U14 cup final v Bolton School

September 9th 2016

Merchant Taylors’ Under 14 team won the county cup for the second year in succession after comprehensively defeating Bolton School at Blackpool Cricket Club.

Bolton won the toss and elected to bat first but made little progress against the opening attack of Alex Barker (2 wickets) and Josh Carberry. Oliver Green took a stunning catch at gully to dismiss the first batsman. The change bowlers, Rob Rankin and Oliver Green ensured that Merchants remained well on top with the run rate slowed down to a crawl. With Bolton under severe pressure Harvey Rankin and Jackson Darkes-Sutcliffe continued to confuse the batsmen with spin and Harvey took 3 wickets to leave Bolton in severe trouble with six wickets down. Rob Rankin’s return for a second spell finished their resistance completely, taking 4 wickets in 2 overs. Bolton’s final total of 88 all out in 32 overs was nowhere near enough to challenge the strong Merchants batting line-up.

Rob Rankin (41) and Jackson Darkes-Sutcliffe (21 not out) put the game beyond doubt with an opening partnership of over 70. With the score on 82 for 2 heavy rain brought an end to proceedings but Merchant Taylors’ were way above the run rate required to win an interrupted game. All the boys should be congratulated on another splendid season which has culminated in this knock-out success. They will now go forward to represent the county in the national stages of the competition as an Under 15 team in 2017.

The squad was as follows:

Jackson Darkes-Sutcliffe (Captain), Robert Rankin, Harvey Rankin, George Politis, Oliver Green, Oliver Meadows, Alex Barker, Scott Thompson, Harry Whitehurst, Josh Carberry, George Hopwood, Jay Singh, Marcus Miller.

MTS Cricketers Selected to Play at Lords

Two of Merchant Taylors’ outstanding cricketers were recently selected to play in a representative match at Lord’s, the home of cricket. George Lavelle who also achieved 9A*s and an A in his GCSEs this summer, had the honour of captaining the England Schools U16 team. Tom Hartley played for MCC Schools, a team selected from the most successful boys who played for their schools against MCC in 2016. This annual fixture always includes a number of boys who go on to play professional cricket – over 60 of them in the last 10 years.

The match was won by England Schools by 50 runs. For MCC Tom Hartley had the best figures, taking 2 wickets for 40 from his 10 overs. Ironically, one of those wickets was George Lavelle! Tom also scored a bright 16 in the MCC innings. George scored 14 for his team, kept wicket very tidily, and as captain led his troops with calm assuredness. It was a fantastic experience for the boys to play at Lord’s and good for the school to have two boys in the match.

After the game both teams, their parents, and officials from ESCA and MCC attended a splendid dinner in the famous Long Room where everyone who spoke paid tribute to the quality of the cricket played by both teams. Hopefully this will not have been the last time George and Tom get to play at Lord’s, but they will always remember the day they walked in the footsteps of Grace, Bradman, Sobers and Botham.

A Biography of Old Girl Beryl Bainbridge

Popular author Dame Beryl Bainbridge attended Merchant Taylors’ School during the war, travelling by train from Formby to Blundellsand. Joining into Lower 2 at Stanfield  in 1942, Beryl describes fond memories of the ‘aesthetic surroundings’ that allowed her to appreciate her education at Merchants until leaving in December 1947.
Dame Beryl Bainbridge went on to become one of the most popular and recognisable English novelists of her generation. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, she established her status as one of the major literary figures of the past fifty years with her critically acclaimed novels The Dressmaker (1973), The Bottle Factory Outing (1974), An Awfully Big Adventure(1990), Every Man For Himself (1996) and Master Georgie (1998).
Brendan King, an author, editor and translator worked for Beryl Bainbridge between 1987 and 2010 and helped to prepare her final novel The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress for publication after her death.  He has now drawn upon a wealth of unpublished letters and diaries to publish a candid and authoritative biography of this well-loved novelist.
Brendan King displays a frank portrait of Beryl Bainbridge, revealing the real woman behind her popular image as a quirky eccentric. He explores her complex private life, merely hinted at in her novels, to narrate the story of Bainbridge’s dramatic and captivating life, much like one of her own perfectly-crafted novels.
The biography Love by All Sorts of Means is now available.
